Woman coaches kids to act retarded in order to collect benefits
Rosie Costello of Tacoma, Washington started teaching her children to act retarded when they were 4 and 8 years old. Her plan worked, and she collected more than $280,000 in benefits from Social Security and state agencies, beginning in the mid-1980s. Her son feigned retardation until he was in his mid-twenties. Mother and son have been charged with conspiracy to defraud the government and Social Security fraud. The daughter has not yet been apprehended.
